What is the CARAT Team?

The CARAT Team is a national environmental justice task force which collects and disseminates information about pollution prevention, protection and response. The CARAT Team is a collaborative effort between minority trade unionists and environmental justice (EJ) advocates from various communities. Currently, there are CARAT Teams operating in twelve U.S. cities.

Each CARAT Team consists of trade unionists, affected and concerned residents, environmental justice advocates, legislators, community leaders, scientists and educators.

CARAT Teams aid other community EJ efforts by having the distinct advantage of being able to lend resources and assistance through established traditional labor avenues of communication. These teams work in conjunction with existing grass roots efforts to help coordinate and empower community-based organizations and their members in the resolution of environmentally related problems.
